WASHINGTON – Call it Glivec, Gleevec, imatinib, or anything else, but Novartis did not obtain a product patent for the myeloid leukemia drug in India.
India's Intellectual Property Appellate Board ruled the drug failed to satisfy the requirements under Section 3(d) of the Indian Patents Act. PharmAsia News' Mumbai bureau talks with experts about the applicability of oft-debated Section 3(d) clause in the Glivec case (PharmAsia News, July 5, 2009).
Big pharma companies are no stranger to China at this point, but taking advantage of opportunities in the country requires an amount of finesse. Merck Director of Licensing and External Research Jennifer Hu spoke with PharmAsia News' Shanghai bureau about the company's licensing strategy in the country, including spurning a brick-and-mortar R&D facility in favor of building a "virtual lab" built on internal research and external collaborations (PharmAsia News, July 1, 2009).
With all eyes on China these days, the government has implemented measures to prevent its citizens from seeing all the Internet has to offer, including sexual health information. The Ministry of Health released a measure that, among other features, makes some information available only to medical professionals. Currently in its winter season, Australia's CSL Limited will begin clinical trials of its H1N1 influenza vaccine July 22. CSL spoke with PharmAsia News Australia bureau about the company's ramp-up of flu vaccines in what is to be expected a busy year thanks to the pandemic status of swine flu(PharmAsia News, July 3, 2009).
